Birmingham Citadel Band (Bandmaster Gavin Lamplough) hosted its annual open rehearsal, with a number of visitors joining in for the first time, on Thursday, 21 November 2013.
Bandmaster Lamplough put the augmented band through its paces with a variety of repertoire with “something for everyone”. Musical acquaintances with former members were renewed as the band played old classics such as The Redcliffe March and Eric Ball’s Song of Courage and more contemporary arrangements such as Praise Him! (Stephen Bulla) and Immanuel (Steven Ponsford).
One current member of the band also got his wish as the bandmaster succumbed and featured Collage of Contemporary Gospel Songs (William Himes) after numerous requests. Second cornet Phil Harris seemed to be a happy man!
On the following Sunday those present at the open rehearsal were invited to play with the band during the evening service at Birmingham Citadel. The band featured three pieces rehearsed on Thursday. They finished with Erik Silfverberg’s march Fill the World with Glory after learning about Silfverberg’s sudden passing earlier in the week. This was a tribute and “thank you for the music” to Erik Silfverberg from the Birmingham Citadel Band – a legendary composer whose influence will live on in his legacy of music.
