This work is a set of variations based on a New Zealand folk song of the same name. The song describes the Brunner coal mine on the west coast, near Greymouth, and tells of the disaster that occurred in the 1890s when dozens of miners were killed in a mine collapse.

The work was commissioned by Onslow Brass Band, Wellington, New Zealand with financial assistance from Creative New Zealand and was first performed and broadcast in 1996.
