[bclink id=”953″ target=”_blank”] (Bandmaster Gavin Lamplough) held its first open rehearsal of 2014 on Thursday, 13 March 2014, and were delighted by the turnout. Over 80 musicians gathered for the twice-yearly “rehearsal with a difference”. Nineteen were attending for the first time.
The youngest brass band enthusiast was just 12 years old and the oldest was in their 80s. Some had been playing for only a few years; others had not played at all in 40 years. Some guests had not played since arriving in England from their native lands several years ago. There was lots of fun and some great (and loud) sounds, in an encouraging atmosphere with an opportunity to play some great music. A highlight of the event was to see former Birmingham Citadel cornet soloist John Hynd and retired Songster Leader Fred Crowhurst doing what they have always done – encouraging a new generation of brass players.
Bandmaster Lamplough chose music reflecting the wide range of tastes and experience in the open rehearsal band. Items included Just As I Am (Wilfred Heaton), Lift Up Your Heart (Dean Goffin), Celebration (Leslie Condon), Fire in the Blood (Paul Lovatt-Cooper) and a newly-published work by former Birmingham Citadel cornetist Paul Sharman entitled Dance Beat.
