As always, the [bclink id=”971″ target=”_blank”] (Bandmaster John Lam) enjoyed an influx of new talent in the fall as students arrive at Western University for post-secondary studies. This year the band welcomes Colin Williams (solo cornet) and Taylor Mitchell (first horn) who are both studying at Western. Williams is from Winnipeg and working on a masters degree in trumpet performance. Mitchell is from the band’s own youth band program and the band expressed excitement that she is now a part of the group.
Unfortunately, some students go elsewhere for university and the band was saddened to say goodbye to Cassie Barrett.
Chris Lemon-Sarris has been accepted at Western and is studying music. He moves from second cornet to first cornet. Deborah Dawe was married over the summer and is now Deborah Giroux. She is still teaching music for the Thames Valley District and playing flügelhorn in the band.
The band also welcomed back some returning former members. Darrin Tilley is an outstanding cornet soloist and was the principal cornet for several years. After a brief hiatus from the band, he is back and sitting next to Craig Woodland on the solo cornet bench. Marty Holmes is also making a return to the band on baritone.
Other internal changes have also taken place in order to maintain a good balance in the band and the band thanks those members for their flexibility and willingness to adjust.
