Staff Band Marks Passing of Ken Graham (1936–2018)

The Canadian Staff Band (Bandmaster John Lam) has announced, with great sadness, the passing of Bandsman Ken Graham (North York Temple) on 24 December 2018. Graham was a member of the Staff Band cornet section for nine years, 1985–1994.

At a very young age, Graham began playng the cornet. He committed his life to Christ at the age of 13, a decision which remained steadfast throughout his life. While stationed with his parents in Belleville he was deeply influenced by a Godly man, Jack Green, who etched into his mind “pray before you play”.

Graham served as a corps musician for 67 years, also tutoring young people for most of that time. In addition to his service with the Staff Band, he served his corps as YP Treasurer, YP Band Leader, Deputy Bandmaster, Songster, and Bandsman.

Among the many highlights of Graham’s musical career were playing the Last Post at the memorial service for King George VI in Vancouver, performing at Disneyland, and participating in the Tournament of Roses Parade. But his proudest moment was the time when, as deputy bandmaster of North York Temple, he conducted his father.

What we do is in praise to God. If you keep that in mind as you’re playing, sometimes just the piece itself can bring a heightened awareness of His presence as you play, and you sense that the Lord is near.
