On Friday, 15 October 2010, the Solent Area Fellowship Band (Bandmaster Chris Kennett) presented a concert at St. John’s Church, Shedfield.
The concert commenced with the band playing a march, Spirit of Joy (Herbert Rive). Reverend Bruce Deans welcomed everyone to the event before inviting the congregation to join with the band in the song “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”.
After Major Derek Smith offered prayer, the band presented three more items: Let There Be Praise (arr. Barrie Gott), Only Love (Vladimir Cosma, arr. P. H. Greenwood) which featured Aubrey Ford on soprano cornet, and the air varié The Old Wells (Eric Ball).
The band was supported by the St. John’s Church Choir (Leader Julia Burgess), who followed with Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Bandmaster Kennett then conducted the band in the song arrangement Whiter Than the Snow (William Himes) and two movements of Morley Calvert’s Canadian Folk Song Suite.
Three items from “the shows” were next, with the band playing Memory (Andrew Lloyd Webber, arr. Goff Richards) and Can You Feel the Love Tonight (Elton John/Tim Rice, arr. Frank Bernaerts). The St. John’s Church Choir, accompanied throughout the evening by David Burgess, then sang a medley of songs from “Oliver”.
Deputy Bandmaster David Samuels conducted the band in Sweet Hour of Prayer (Erik Leidzén) before Major Smith read some words from Scripture. The band then played two contrasting items, Prelude on “Quem Pastores” and the march Flag of Freedom (Bramwell Coles).
In conclusion, Reverend Deans expressed his appreciation for the evening’s activities and offered a final prayer.
