Portsmouth Visit for Solent Fellowship Band

On Sunday, 24 October 2010, the Solent Area Fellowship Band (Bandmaster Chris Kennett), together with guest vocal soloist Yvonne Samuels, presented a concert at Portsmouth Citadel.

The concert commenced with the Fellowship Band ’s playing of In the King’s Service (Erik Leidzén). Major Cedric Hills, Portsmouth Citadel corps officer, welcomed everyone to the event and, following a congregational song, offered prayer.

Bandmaster Kennett then conducted the band in Ray Steadman-Allen’s Selections from “Spirit!”. An individual item followed, featuring the Fellowship Band’s soprano cornetist, Aubrey Ford, who played Only Love (Vladimir Cosma, arr. P. H. Greenwood).

Yvonne Samuels then presented her first solo, Precious Jesus (words attr. Francis Bottome, music Mervyn V. Clarke). Two items from “the shows” followed, with the band playing Memory (Andrew Lloyd Webber, arr. Goff Richards) and Can You Feel the Love Tonight? (Elton John/Tim Rice, arr. Frank Bernaerts).

After a congregational song, the band played the march Spirit of Joy (Herbert Rive). Yvonne Samuels returned and sang Leonard Ballantine’s arrangement of My Jesus, I Love Thee. Following this, the band played Prelude on “Quem Pastores” (Geoffrey Nobes).

Major Derek Smith read some words from Scripture before Deputy Bandmaster David Samuels conducted the band in Sweet Hour of Prayer (Erik Leidzén).

The concert concluded with two movements from Morley Calvert’s Canadian Folk Song Suite. Major Lyn Hills thanked everyone for their attendance before offering a final prayer.
