Williams Steps Down

Bandmaster Lt.-Colonel Mike Williams has sadly had to relinquish his duties as bandmaster of the Upper Norwood Band.

The occasion was marked by a special Service of Recognition on 23 January 2011. The service included a tribute from euphonium player Russell Allen and the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation by the corps officer, Major Jenine Main. Williams then conducted the band in the march Star Lake (Eric Ball). It was a moving and emotional service, and Williams will be sorely missed in this position.

Williams has been a member of the Upper Norwood Band for the past thirty-two years. He served as Deputy Bandmaster for eleven years and as Bandmaster since 2004. An accomplished Bb tuba player, he was a member of the International Staff Band for ten years. As a musician in the corps band, he showed the flexibility which is a hallmark of Salvation Army bandsmen, recalling that during his time in the Upper Norwood Band he has played every instrument and part possible, including percussion.
