The [bclink id=”1007″ target=”_blank”] (Bandmaster John Bird) has announced, with deep regret and sadness, that Bill Unwin was promoted to Glory on Saturday, 15 September 2012. Unwin passed away suddenly, at home, and thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Doreen, and other members of the family at this sad time.
Unwin was for many years the solo horn player of the Southampton Shirley Salvation Army Band. In 1996, he became a founding member of the Solent Fellowship Band, where he gave exceptional service and was well-respected by his fellow members. Always enjoying the fellowship of the band, he was particularly delighted when his son, Tony Unwin, joined the band in 2002 on euphonium. For most of the time since the formation of the Fellowship Band, Unwin was one-half of the first horn section.
A statement posted on the band’s web site said, in part, “We will miss his great sense of humour, his caustic wit (often directed at the bass trombone player) and his timely words of wisdom to many of us, which we have all greatly appreciated.”
