This music, scored for full brass band, is based on the hymn tune “Melita”, associated with the words, “Eternal Father, strong to save ...”. This tune is often referred to as the Navy Hymn, as it is the official hymn of both the Royal Navy (UK) and the US Navy.
The premiere performance of Strong to Save, given by the Melbourne Staff Band (Bandmaster Ken Waterworth), was part of a commemoration weekend held in June 2012 to mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Japanese naval ship Montevideo Maru which claimed the lives of over 1,000 Australian military personnel. Among those that died were sixteen Australian Salvation Army bandsmen who were members of the 2/22nd Battalion Band, including Bandmaster Arthur Gullidge, whose music (much of which was published by the Salvation Army) will be familiar to many.
Strong to Save is stirring music suitable for any military remembrance service.
