Faithful was commissioned by Bandmaster Gavin Lamplough to help celebrate the Salvation Army Birmingham Citadel’s 125th anniversary in 2017. The original music is scored for brass band, SATB choir, and piano. It is also available for brass band alone.
“How Firm a Foundation” is featured in the first section and speaks of a faithful God. This leads to a reference to the well-loved hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”, unusually set in a minor key.
The core of the music features the beautiful song “He’s Always Been Faithful to Me”, written and recorded by contemporary Christian artist Sara Groves.
The final tune featured is “Southport”, associated with the words “A charge to keep I have”. This tune is an essential part of the music for band, The Present Age, written by Leslie Condon. As such, there are some musical references to tis ground-breaking Salvation Army music.
