This work is a set of variations based on a New Zealand folk song of the same name. The song describes the Brunner coal mine on the west coast, near Greymouth, and tells of the disaster that occurred in the 1890s when dozens of miners were killed in a mine collapse.

Clouds (trombone solo)
The starting point for this piece was some dramatic cloud formations experienced by the composer while in Morrinsville, New Zealand.
Triptych (euphonium solo with piano accompaniment)
A wide range of moods are created in this work, ranging from the energetic and forceful opening to the melancholic and dreamy quieter sections. Both euphonium and piano have challenging roles.
