Beginning in January 2019, we’ll be featuring a hymn tune from our Two-Part Hymn Series each week.
Russell Kelso Carter (1849–1928)
First publication: 1886
The writer of this hymn (both words and music), Russell Kelso Carter, had a military background. This is evident in the somewhat martial tone of the music for Standing on the Promises, the most well-known of his songs. Carter attended the Pennsylvania Military Academy in Chester and was a member of the first graduating class in 1867. He stayed there, teaching chemistry, mathematics, natural science, and engineering, for some years. In 1887, Carter was ordained as a Methodist minister, and then earned a medical degree, finishing his varied career as a medical doctor in his native Baltimore.
