Lt.-Colonel Kenneth W. Maynor has been appointed as the Executive Officer of the New York Staff Band (Bandmaster Ron Waiksnoris). Maynor replaces Major Thomas V. Mack, who has retired after a distinguished career with the Salvation Army, including some 40 years of service in various capacities with the Staff Band.
Maynor was recently appointed to USA Eastern Territorial Headquarters in West Nyack, New York, where he is responsible for program and ministry development. He was appointed as the Executive Officer of the New York Staff Band in June 2009. He stated, “I am humbled and honored to serve as the Executive Officer of the New York Staff Band. I am looking forward to sharing in ministry and fellowship with this premier music force for the honor and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
At the first Salvation Army meeting Kenneth Maynor attended, the congregation consisted of five people! A high school junior at the time, he visited what was then the Cleveland Newburgh, OH Corps at his cousin’s insistence. He had become a Christian at age 9 at a Lutheran Sunday school and, while the small congregation seemed unusual, something in the meeting impressed him deeply. That something he later recognized as the presence of the Holy Spirit. He soon felt at home in that corps, which became the Cleveland Miles Park Corps. At a cadets campaign meeting, where he could not understand the preacher’s broken English, Kenneth clearly heard God’s voice. He committed himself to officership as God’s plan for his life.
Kenneth met Cheryl Staff when she became the corps helper at his corps. They married in 1977 and entered the School for Officer Training in 1978 as members of the “Proclaimers of Salvation” session.
In 1980, he and Cheryl were commissioned as corps officers of Akron Temple, OH. This was followed by corps appointments in Massillon, OH, then Warren, OH. They were appointed divisional youth leaders for the Empire State Division in 1987. In 1992, Captain Kenneth Maynor became the assistant territorial youth secretary. In 1994, he was appointed the territorial candidates’ secretary.
In 1999, Kenneth was appointed Divisional Commander of the Southwest Ohio & Northeast Kentucky Division (SWONEKY) and promoted to the rank of Major. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational management from Nyack College, Nyack, NY.
Kenneth loves the vocation God has chosen for him, especially because it is a shared ministry with Cheryl. He also finds great joy in their sons, Keith and Kyle, and is blessed and thrilled to be grandparents to Ava, Jeremiah and Kenson. He describes reading and walking as favorite recreational activities, though he also enjoys a good game of basketball now and then.
Kenneth says he finds particular satisfaction in seeing the miracles God works in people’s lives today. He is especially enthusiastic about young people. “I love young people! They are not just our future, they’re our present. They provide energy and creativity to the Body of Christ that otherwise would be missing.”
