Bandmaster Richard Phillips (Kettering Citadel, UK) was the guest for the 31st annual Profile Night, held at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York. The event featured the New York Staff Band, the Greater New York Youth Chorus, and a massed adult chorus of some 200 voices.
Phillips, an accomplished pianist, performed the first movement of Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, accompanied by the Staff Band. Other items from the band included New York Profile (composed for this festival), Lord, With My All I Part and Metamorphosis.
The Massed Chorus sang Let a Little Sunshine in Your Heart, Fairest Lord Jesus (for which Phillips has composed an original melody entitled “Churchbury”) and Holy, Thou Art Holy.
The very lively Youth Chorus sang two songs composed by Phillips for the UK National School of Music, Song for Joy and Dwell Within, the latter with words by Colin Fairclough.
Gillian Morton, who was a member of the International Staff Songsters when Phillips was their accompanist, sang The Wonder of God. The final item of the evening was the cornet solo All There Is of Me presented by Staff Bandsman Derek Lance, who had arrived late at the concert because of an engagement with the West Point Band which had run overtime.
Profile 31 was a wonderful evening of music-making which did not disappoint anyone in the nearly capacity congregation in attendance.
