Sussex Carol

Tune of the Week returns with a selection from the Two-Part Hymn Series Christmas Collection. This is a traditional English carol, with many versions dating back to at least the 1600s. The words most often associated with the tune begin with “On Christmas Night all Christians sing”. This arrangement is based on the most common modern version, collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams and used in his Fantasia on Christmas Carols published in 1912.

Christmas Collection Underway

The first ten tunes in the 2-Part Hymn Series Christmas Collection have been published. You can download them individually, but we recommend that you wait a few weeks as there will be fifty total tunes in the finished collection, planned to be completed on or around 1 October 2025.

All Through the Night

Each week we feature a tune from the Two-Part Hymn Series. This week’s tune is All Through the Night. A classic Welsh tune, first known to have been published in 1764 under the title Ar Hyd y Nos, this tune has been used for many texts. Often presented as a lullaby, it is sometimes heard as a Christmas song. Part of the great folk tradition of Wales, it is a part of the standard repertoire of Welsh male-voice choirs.

Each week, we feature a tune from the Two-Part Hymn Series. This week’s tune is EUDOXIA. It was written in 1868 by the well-known hymn composer Sabine Baring-Gould. A short, simple tune, it is most often associated with the text Now the day is over, but many texts can be set to this melody.
